What is cloud computing?

The concept of ‘cloud computing’ encompasses the technology that enables the functionality of the cloud. This technology involves the virtualization of IT infrastructure, which includes servers, operating system software, networking components, and other infrastructure elements. Through the use of specialized software, this infrastructure is abstracted, allowing it to be pooled and allocated without being constrained by physical hardware limitations. For instance, a single physical server can be subdivided into multiple virtual servers.

about Cloud

Cloud Computing services

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

IaaS provides virtualized computing resources over the internet. Users can rent virtual machines, storage, and networking infrastructure, giving them the flexibility to build, manage, and scale their own virtualized IT environments.

Platform as a Service (PaaS)

PaaS offers a platform and environment for developers to build, deploy, and manage applications without worrying about the underlying infrastructure. It includes tools, databases, and runtime environments for application development.

Software as a Service (SaaS)

SaaS delivers fully functional software applications over the internet on a subscription basis. Users access the software through web browsers without the need for installation or maintenance. Common examples include email services, office productivity suites, and customer relationship management (CRM) software.

Types of Cloud Computing

Cloud computing encompasses various service models and deployment models, resulting in different types of cloud computing to meet the diverse needs of businesses and individuals. The primary types of cloud computing are categorized based on service models and deployment models:

Public Cloud

Public cloud services are owned and operated by third-party cloud service providers and are made available to the general public. Users share the same infrastructure, benefiting from cost-effectiveness and scalability. Examples: AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

Private cloud

Private clouds are dedicated cloud infrastructures used by a single organization. They offer greater control, security, and customization but often require more resources to set up and maintain. Examples: Private cloud solutions from VMware, IBM Cloud Private, OpenStack.

Hybrid cloud

Hybrid cloud combines both public and private cloud resources, allowing data and applications to be shared between them. This provides flexibility and scalability while maintaining control over sensitive data. Examples: Azure Hybrid Cloud, AWS Outposts, Google Anthos.

Multicloud and hybrid multicloud

Multi-cloud is the use of multiple cloud providers to meet specific business needs. Organizations may use different cloud providers for various applications or services. Examples: Using AWS for storage, Azure for machine learning, and GCP for data analytics.
